だから、キリストの力が私に宿るように、むしろ大いに自分の弱さを誇りましょう。それゆえ、私は弱さ、侮辱、迫害、行き詰まりの中にあっても、キリストのために喜んでいます。

◇「私は、弱いときにこそ強い」とは？

－コップと水というメタファーで考える

​

私というコップが自我の水（自力 じりき）で一杯のとき、神はキリストの水（他力 たりき）をコップに注ぐことはできない。

 

このような在（あ）り方で、自力によって〈世の思い煩い〉に立ち向かおうとするとき、私たちはしばしば不安と恐怖に捕（と）らわれ、そして立ちすくむ。

 

しかし、自我の水が失われてコップが空になったとき、すなわち私たちが弱くされ、その弱さに徹したとき、初めてキリストの生命（いのち）の水は私たちを満たすことができる。

​

このキリストの水は、私たちを世の不安と恐怖に打ち勝たせる神の力である。

「私は弱いときにこそ強い」というパウロの言葉が意味するものは、これではないだろうか。

So I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me.

Therefore I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities for the sake of Christ, for whenever I am weak, then I am strong.

◇What does "When I am weak, then I am strong" mean?

- Thinking with the metaphor of a cup and water

​

When the cup that is me is full of the water of ego (self-power), God cannot pour the water of Christ (other power that is not my own) into it.

​​

In this state, when we try to face the "anxieties of the world", by relying on our own power, we often become seized by anxieties and fears, and become paralyzed.

​​​​

However, only when the water of ego is lost and the cup is empty, that is, when we are weakened and fully present in our weakness, can the water of Christ's life fill us.

​

This water of Christ is the power of God that enables us to overcome the anxieties and fears of this world.

​

This is thought to be what Paul meant when he said, "When I am weak, then I am strong."
