あぁ、聖なる夜！　星々はきらめき輝く。
It is the night of our dear Savior's birth！
この夜、われらの愛する救い主（ぬし）は生まれた！

Long lay the world in sin and error pining
久しく世界は罪と過ちの中に沈み、〔救いを〕切望した。
'Til He appear'd and the soul felt His worth.
救い主が〔地上に〕来られ（注1）、人々が彼の〔到来の〕真価を知るまで〔は〕。

A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices
疲へいした世界は喜び、希望に〔心〕ふるえる。
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn！
かしこにて、新しき栄光の朝（あした）が訪れるのだから！

そしてキリストの御名（みな）において、すべての抑圧〔と憂（うれ）い〕は〔ついに〕止（や）む（注6）。

うるわしき喜びの讃歌を、われら、感謝に溢（あふ）れ声を合わせて歌う。

注4 「われらの同胞」はわれら自身

同胞（はらから）には、別個の人間として互いに「他者」であるという側面と、同じ親から生まれた兄弟姉妹として「同質の者たち」であるという側面がある。

O Holy Nightは、全体として神・キリストに対する「われら」の信仰告白と讃美の詩歌（しいか）であり、ここでの「同胞（our brother）」という表現には、同胞と同質である「われら」が含意されていると考える。

つまり、この表現の背後には「われら自身が囚われ人であり、その囚われの鎖をキリストが断ち切ってくださる（くださった）のだ」という告白が込められていると受けとめる。

注5 Thee（ズィー）

英語の古語で「あなた」を意味する。ここでは、文語の「汝（なんじ）」の訳を当てた。

注6 解放と救済の希望

​​ビッグバンに始まる138億年の宇宙と、その中のすべてのものを創造された父なる神。その神の独（ひと）り子であるイエス・キリスト。

 

神と御子（みこ）キリストによる救済（すくい）は、個人にとどまらず、社会と国家そして世界、ついには全宇宙（すべての被造世界）に及ぶ。
